Glaucoma Treatment |
Bimatoprost also known by various names like Lumigan, Latisse, Bimat, Bimican, Carelash, Careprost, Glamigan, Lumigan RC, Miraclash, TopLash and Xlash is an ophthalmic drug from prostaglandin analogues group. The
drug is primarily prescribed to treat Open
Angle Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension
in people above 40 years of age. It works on reducing Intraocular Pressure (IOP) by increasing the outflow of Aqueous Humour
from the eyes by clearing blockage. The medication is also used as a cosmetic
solution to grow eyelashes on upper
eyelids (for longer, thicker and darker eyelashes) in case of Hypotrichosis.
In generic terms Aqueous Humour is a natural lubricant produced to keep your eye
balls well lubricated, facilitate cleansing of the eyeballs and thus enhance clarity
of vision every time. It is an alkaline liquid that occupies the anterior and
posterior chambers of the eye (in front of iris and lens and ring-like space
encircling the lens). Aqueous humour is
similar to blood plasma in composition but contains less protein and glucose
and more of lactic acid and ascorbic acid. It provides these vital nutrients
along with oxygen to eye tissues that lack direct blood supply (such as the
lens) and helps in removing the waste products. Apart from this, Aqueous humour
gives internal pressure (IOP) that keeps the eyeballs in their proper shape.
Most importantly this fluid has to drain out naturally so that the waste
products are thrown out leaving the eye with a clear vision every time.
Blockage of this fluid is a condition called Glaucoma.
Bimat or generic
Latisse is pharmacologically exclusive and effective anti-glaucoma agent.
It is known to lower (IOP) or intraocular pressure by behaving as a
pro-drug. It facilitates outflow of aqueous humour which is blocked due to difficult
angle created near the iris. Because of sustained blockage of fluid the
pressure (intraocular pressure) slowly builds up on optic nerve that can
threaten total loss of vision if not intervened in time. Eyes having glaucoma
suffer from blurred vision and experience halo or multiple rings around bright
lights. When Lumigan is dropped in
the eye it increases the drainage of aqueous fluid out of the eyeball thus
making your vision crisp and clear. Bimatoprost significantly decreases the IOP
relieving optic nerve from getting strained for a long time and thus saves it from
damage.
